As many as 17% of American adults aged 65 or older have lost all their teeth. In decades past, that meant selecting dentures to replace missing natural teeth. While denture technology does an amazing job, conventional denture plates replace only the portions of your teeth above the gum line.

Dental implants restore both tooth and root, providing a more complete tooth replacement system. Now, people who are missing complete arches can replace them with the All-on-4® treatment concept. Global Facial Aesthetics in River Forest, Illinois, is an All-on-4 specialist, ready to help you with permanent and semi-permanent full arch solutions.

While the All-on-4 system represents a significant advance in denture technology, some people aren’t ideal candidates for treatment. Here’s how to know if All-on-4 implants are right for you.

The benefit of dental implants

You likely think of the roots of your teeth as anchors, holding them in place, and that’s certainly one of their most important jobs. Part of how tooth roots accomplish this anchoring task is the association with the bone tissue that surrounds them.

When you’ve lost a tooth and use a bridge or denture to replace it, only the visible portion of the original tooth is restored. There’s no tooth/bone interaction since there’s no replacement for the tooth’s root. Without this, bone tissue can deteriorate over time, changing the shape of the jawbone and, ultimately, the fit of the denture appliances that rely on that shape.

Dental implants use tiny titanium posts to replace a tooth root. These are biologically inert, and over time the bone of your jaw integrates with the implant, creating the best artificial tooth/jaw interaction. You don’t need to worry about fading bone tissue or denture fit adjustments.

All-on-4 advantages

Instead of one implant for every lost tooth, the All-on-4 system uses four implants to secure an entire denture arch to the top jaw, bottom jaw, or both.

Depending on your needs and the condition of your mouth, these dentures can be permanent or removable. Whichever style you choose, you can say goodbye to slipping denture plates since four implants hold them in place as you eat and speak.

Candidates for All-on-4

Each patient is assessed on an individual basis for an All-on-4 system. Because of its unique nature, an All-on-4 treatment has different requirements than other types of denture or implant. Most candidates have lost all or nearly all teeth on an arch due to decay, trauma, or gum disease.

The amount and density of remaining bone tissue are important for a successful implant. Determining this requires a detailed examination, including X-rays to view jawbone density. Some people have underlying health conditions that may interfere with healing, making other denture solutions more viable.

It all starts with an assessment at Global Facial Aesthetics. Dr. Gary Alder is an implant specialist, and he can discuss your suitability for All-on-4 treatment. Contact the office by phone or online to schedule your consultation today.

I have been a patient of Dr. Alder’s for over 20 years and cannot say enough good things about him and his wonderful office team. Dr. Alder is a leader in the dental profession in Illinois and Chicago and has served on the Boards of both the Illinois and Chicago Dental Societies. I’ve had some real dental challenges over the years and I’ve felt that Dr. Alder always seemed to be going extra miles to make sure we we’re taking the right approach to treatment and that I understood the options available. I also had three dental emergencies during those 20 years and Dr. Alder and his team were always there when I needed them, They are all consummate professionals and—importantly—are also unfailingly gracious and cheerful. Dr. Alder is the best!
