Sleep apnea, derived from the Greek word “apnoia,” meaning “breathless,” is a prevalent sleep disorder that interrupts breathing during sleep.
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the throat muscles relax, causing a blockage in the airway. This can lead to loud snoring, choking sounds, and restless nights. Patients with OSA may experience over a hundred episodes of breath-holding (lasting 10 seconds or more) during the night.
When breathing stops, the brain signals the body to restart the breathing cycle, often leading to fatigue and chronic tiredness—often without the person realizing they have sleep apnea.
Obesity: Excess weight can pressure the airways, causing breathing interruptions during sleep.
Age: Aging weakens throat and tongue muscles, increasing the risk of airway blockage.
Genetics: A family history of sleep apnea can make you more susceptible to the condition.
Other Factors: Smoking, alcohol consumption, nasal congestion, and structural abnormalities can also contribute to sleep apnea risk.

Hello, I am Kathy, the dental hygienist at Global Facial Aesthetics Dental. I started my dental career as a dental assistant, progressed to be a clinical coordinator, and then continued my education in Dental Hygiene at Kennedy-King College. I have been a Dental Hygienist for 22 years and enjoy providing my patients with the essential care needed to help them achieve optimal health.
My goal is to create a positive dental experience with compassion and care. I want my patients to be experts in caring for their beautiful smiles. I believe, with the dental knowledge I have accumulated throughout the years, I can help make that happen. Outside of dentistry, I have several other interests, but my top three are: being a Chicago Blackhawks fan, crafting, and spending time with my dog, Max.
Hi, my name is Rose. I have been in the dental field for 30-plus years. I have worked in all aspects of the dental field. The last 10 years, I have primarily been on the insurance side. The first thing I notice about people is their smile. It’s amazing how far dentistry has come since I first started. Restoring a beautiful smile and chewing abilities to our patients makes me smile. I have been married for 33 years. I have two beautiful adult daughters. My husband and I are really enjoying this chapter of our lives.
I was born, raised, and married to Gary in Utah. I received training as a Dental Assistant at Hill Air Force Base in Utah. When we moved to Illinois for Gary to go to dental school, we had a one-year-old daughter. I worked as a Dental Assistant for one of the few dentists that were doing dental implants at the time. During Gary’s senior year, I had a baby boy. At this time, I became an “at-home mom” and had two more boys.
As the children were getting older, I decided to become a Dental Laboratory Technician. After two years’ training, I received an associate degree at Triton College and was blessed with a baby girl. I now have five children. I was able to work part time and have my own laboratory in my home. This allowed me to be home with my children and take them to school and other activities. I did this for about 10 years.
Hi, I am Nancy, a Dental Assistant, Insurance Specialist, and Patient Advocate at Global Facial Aesthetics. I have been in the field of dentistry for over 40 years, working with Dr. Period Alder for most of those years. During that time, I have assisted in all aspects of General Dentistry as well as TMD treatment, Sleep Apnea appliances, and cancer patient reconstruction. I find the dentistry we provide for our patients extremely rewarding.
